Reconciliation: The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book

This book provides a thoroughly biblical guide to reconciliation - its passions and problems, its complexity and utter cruciality. Muthuraj Swamy has written a book for our times, and offers new angles on old stories, prophetic messages, and a gospel wisdom on becoming people of peace. Muthuraj Swamy is Director of the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide. He has rich cross-cultural experience in theological education, world Christianity, interfaith engagement and church involvement.

Movie Club

We’re starting up a Movie Club. It will be like a Book Club, but without the books! The idea is that we will watch a thought-provoking movie in the comfort of our own home, or somebody else’s (with their permission, obviously), and then come together with others in a local hostelry to discuss the film in the context of contemporary Christianity. Movie Club will be held quarterly, beginning in February. The precise date will be announced soon, but we can tell you that the first movie will be Hidden Figures, which tells the story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space programme.

Candlemas Children

At the Feast of Candlemas (which we will celebrate on Sunday 3rd February) we will thank God for the children who were baptised in our churches during 2018. Why Candlemas? Well, because on this day we recall that Joseph and Mary presented Jesus to God in the Temple at Jerusalem and said ‘thank you’ for the gift of their child. And so we will be inviting parents and, through them, godparents, family members and friends to the Candlemas All-Age Service at St Mildred’s on the 3rd February 2019 at 9.30am. During the service we will light a candle and say a prayer for each child.

Mindful Prayer: The Art of Lent

On Boxing Day, TV art historian and nun Sister Wendy Beckett died at the age of 88. In the 1990s Sister Wendy became one of the most unlikely television stars. Emerging from her hermit-like existence in a caravan at a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, Sister Wendy hosted unscripted BBC shows from art galleries across the world. One of her books is entitled The Art of Lent. We had already decided to use this book as the basis for a series of Lenten reflective services, in St Mildred’s on Saturday mornings (9th March to the 13th April) from 9am until 9.30am. These sessions will help us discover the timeless wisdom to be found in some of the world’s greatest paintings, and enable us to make the most of the Lenten season. After each session we adjourn to a local café for breakfast, though this is not compulsory!

All Around My Hat

If you’ve read Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol, you will know that Martha Cratchit, the daughter of Bob Cratchit (Scrooge's clerk) works in a milliner's shop. In true Dickensian spirit, we thought we’d ask you to get a hat for Christmas Day, and wear it to St Mildred’s for the 9.30am Eucharist of Christmas Morning. You can either come over all creative, or nip to a shop (though going to a milliner might be overdoing it) and buy one. World famous haute couture hat-designer, Philip Treacy, once said, “Wearing a hat is fun; people have a good time when they're wearing a hat.” We’re going to have such a great time on Christmas morning, celebrating the birth of Jesus, that it’s difficult to see how hats can possibly increase the enjoyment! Let’s see, shall we?

Each reflection contains a picture, a short Bible passage and a challenge to reflect or act differently. Together the reflections form a journey through Jesus’ earthly life, a journey that will help you take the joy and wonder of Christmas into the year ahead. Copies of Follow the Star will be available in our churches nearer Christmas.
