Reverse Advent Calendar

to Dec 23

Reverse Advent Calendar

A little while ago, Julie Packham of St Mildred’s discovered a different way of marking the days of Advent. We’re used to Advent calendars with their little windows and chocolate treats. The Reverse Advent Calendar sends the food in the other direction! On each of the days of the Advent season, simply add a daily item of food to a basket and, at the end of Advent, add the contents to the foodbank collection? Then simply bring your Reverse Advent Calendar to church and pop the contents into the foodbank donations box. Why not put items for the last two or three days into your Reverse Advent Calendar in advance so that you can bring the contents to church before Christmas. And of course, if you are a traditionalist, you could still buy an Advent Calendar from Jill’s Traidcraft Stall at St Mildred’s!

Posada
Nov
1
to Dec 1

Posada

Posada is an old Mexican tradition. The word posada means inn or shelter in Spanish. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, young people, dressed as Mary and Joseph, would travel from house to house, ask for a room for the night and tell people about the imminent arrival of Jesus. On Christmas Eve they would visit the local church to re-enact the nativity and place the figures of Mary and Joseph in a crib. Would you like to be part of Posada? Instead of asking you to dress up, we are inviting you to host the nativity figures of Mary and Joseph for one night during Advent. If you would like to host Mary and Joseph, then contact Tara Smith (01580 765414/764783/tara@tenterdencofe.co.uk) and we’ll explain more!

Christmas Cheer!

Last year we requested donations to enable us to help those in our community who are finding life extremely tough at the moment and so bring just a little Christmas cheer. With the money we bought Tesco vouchers for seventeen hard-pressed local families. We are running the Christmas Cheer project again this year. Please give your donation in an envelope marked ‘Christmas Cheer’ to any of our ministers, or pop your envelope into the cross-aisle safe at St Mildred’s Church. The closing date will be Sunday 9th December. Thank you for your support.

Experience Church

We are following the success of Experience Christmas and Experience Easter with another Experience for the children of St Michael’s School and Tenterden Junior School. This time, the children will Experience Church. Experience Church uses features of the church building to teach about key events in the life of Jesus, offering an insight into the worship and witness of the local church community. It employs a range of multi-sensory activities to engage children in discussion and reflection. The children of St Michael’s Primary School will come to St Michael’s Church on Tuesday 20th November, and the children of Tenterden Junior School will come to St Mildred’s Church on Wednesday 21st November and Thursday 22nd November. The three sessions all begin early in the afternoon. If you’d like to help (and we would welcome plenty of help) please contact Cris (07920 484637 / cris@tenterdencofe.co.uk).

Follow the Star

Follow The Star is a pocket-sized booklet inviting you to travel in the footsteps of the Wise Men this Christmas to meet Jesus. Follow the Star takes you through the twelve days of Christmas by means of fourteen daily reflections, one for each day from Christmas Eve, ending with Epiphany on the 6th January. Each reflection contains a picture, a short Bible passage and a challenge to reflect or act differently. Together the reflections form a journey through Jesus’ earthly life, a journey that will help you take the joy and wonder of Christmas into the year ahead. Copies of Follow the Star will be available in our churches nearer Christmas.

Mindful Prayer in Advent

Mindful Prayer is a new initiative which will take place on the last Saturday of the month at St Mildred’s. It will be, as the name implies, a time of quiet reflection. Beginning at 9am, Mindful Prayer will last for thirty minutes, and be followed, for those who wish to come, by breakfast in a local café. To ‘launch’ Mindful Prayer, we are holding three special sessions during Advent, to create a bit of spiritual space for you in the midst of a busy December. These sessions will be held at 9am in St Mildred’s on the first three Saturdays of Advent (1st December, 8th December, and 15th December). The theme of these sessions will be The Art of Advent. On each of the Advent Saturdays, we shall reflect upon a painting and deepen our insight into this wonderful season that leads to Christmas. Mindful Prayer will be held monthly thereafter on the last Saturday of the month, beginning on the 23rd February.

All Around My Hat

If you’ve read Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol, you will know that Martha Cratchit, the daughter of Bob Cratchit (Scrooge's clerk) works in a milliner's shop. In true Dickensian spirit, we thought we’d ask you to get a hat for Christmas Day, and wear it to St Mildred’s for the 9.30am Eucharist of Christmas Morning. You can either come over all creative, or nip to a shop (though going to a milliner might be overdoing it) and buy one. World famous haute couture hat-designer, Philip Treacy, once said, “Wearing a hat is fun; people have a good time when they're wearing a hat.” We’re going to have such a great time on Christmas morning, celebrating the birth of Jesus, that it’s difficult to see how hats can possibly increase the enjoyment! Let’s see, shall we?

Candlemas Children

At the Feast of Candlemas (which we will celebrate on Sunday 3rd February) we will thank God for the children who were baptised in our churches during 2018. Why Candlemas? Well, because on this day we recall that Joseph and Mary presented Jesus to God in the Temple at Jerusalem and said ‘thank you’ for the gift of their child. And so we will be inviting parents and, through them, godparents, family members and friends to the Candlemas All-Age Service at St Mildred’s on the 3rd February 2019 at 9.30am. During the service we will light a candle and say a prayer for each child.
