Mindful Prayer: The Art of Lent

On Boxing Day, TV art historian and nun Sister Wendy Beckett died at the age of 88. In the 1990s Sister Wendy became one of the most unlikely television stars. Emerging from her hermit-like existence in a caravan at a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, Sister Wendy hosted unscripted BBC shows from art galleries across the world. One of her books is entitled The Art of Lent. We had already decided to use this book as the basis for a series of Lenten reflective services, in St Mildred’s on Saturday mornings (9th March to the 13th April) from 9am until 9.30am. These sessions will help us discover the timeless wisdom to be found in some of the world’s greatest paintings, and enable us to make the most of the Lenten season. After each session we adjourn to a local café for breakfast, though this is not compulsory!

Holy Week

to Apr 21

Holy Week

Holy Week is the most important time of the Christian year. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Day, and tells the story of the last week of Jesus’ life on earth.

We often think of Holy Week as the commemoration, one at a time, of a series of events in the life of Jesus. But Holy Week is really a single observance with an integral unity of purpose and proclamation. Holy Week is like a procession, which begins with palms and branches on Palm Sunday, and continues throughout the week as we follow Jesus to the cross and to the glory and wonder of his resurrection.

Come and follow Jesus faithfully in the whole procession of Holy Week. If you do, it will be your privilege to share in some of the richest rites and ceremonies of the Christian Church, and so be fed and nourished spiritually by drawing closer to Jesus, our Messiah and Lord.

At the Feast of Candlemas (which we will celebrate on Sunday 3rd February) we will thank God for the children who were baptised in our churches during 2018. Why Candlemas? Well, because on this day we recall that Joseph and Mary presented Jesus to God in the Temple at Jerusalem and said ‘thank you’ for the gift of their child. And so we will be inviting parents and, through them, godparents, family members and friends to the Candlemas All-Age Service at St Mildred’s on the 3rd February 2019 at 9.30am.
